Numerical Reasoning

Three question types are included in this cognition area of the PI cognitive assessment. Take my quick and interactive timed quiz, made with original sample questions to see how well you do:

The answer is 0.15

In the past two years,Nina’s salary grew by 25% each year. Two years ago, her salary was $80,000 per year. What will be Nina’s annual salary this year?

The answer is (80*1.25)*1.25

Step 1: [(80*1)+(80*0.25)=100

Step 2: [(100*1.25)=125

You can practice and improve on all three numerical reasoning question types. However, for some of you (including myself at the time) it may require a serious review of school-level math.

Verbal Reasoning

The three verbal reasoning questions on the PI cognitive assessment require high level of vocabulary and fast reading skills for the analysis question type. The assessment is available in 70+ languages so you must take it in your mother tongue! Here are three original practice questions:

Really simple, only requires strong vocabulary. You better take the test in a language you feel most comfortable with.

Here’s a really good list of analogy types and solving strategies:

This one’s a bit harder. It involves reading assumptions and connecting them in logical bridges. Only practice can get you to master this question type.

Before taking the real test, you’ll be presented with three sample questions. One of them belongs to verbal analysis. Let’s solve it together.

Assumptions

• Sally laughs every time the bell rings.
• The bell rang twice yesterday.

Conclusion:

Sally laughed only twice yesterday.

Solution: The conclusion cannot be determined. The first assumption tells us about a specific condition that makes Sally laugh. However, we are not told that this is the only condition. There may be other things that cause Sally to laugh.

Abstract Reasoning

This section is “fun” as there’s no reading required, and you simply need to work out the pattern.

Free, 50-question, 12-minute practice tests

I was able to find a nice amount of tests that include 50 questions and need to be solved in 12 minutes. They’re a great way to practice freely, although I wouldn’t count on them alone.

PI cognitive assessment scores

• Your score is based on the number of correct answers you got (raw score).
• A raw score is converted into a percentile score, which tells the employer how well you did in comparison to other candidates.
• The average raw score is around 20 out of 50.
• There’s no negative scoring – guess the questions you can’t solve!

PI cognitive assessment Tips for success

1. Don’t step into this step without preparation!
2. Don’t feel ashamed of preparing. Employers prefer that you prepare and do your best.
3. Get used to the 12-minute time limit by practicing with as many tests as possible.
4. Take the test in optimal conditions: food, sleep, caffeine, isolated environment.
5. Take the test in your mother tongue.
6. There’s a second testing round, don’t cheat and prepare again for round 2.
7. Don’t spend more than 25 seconds per question.

Which number has the lowest value?
Why is the right answer 2/5+0.35?
2/5+0.35=0.4+0.35=0.75
1/3+0.4=0.33(3)+0.4=0.73(3)
0.73(3) Isn't it?

Answer to #2 should be “D” as it’s the only option with 10 lines. (“A” and “B” have 9 each, “C” has 11)
Answer to #3 should be “A”. The given answer (“D”) is incorrect as the flag doesn’t change color there.

Dan appears to be right. B can easily be counted as 9 lines if viewed as an irregular pentagon with a line in the middle (which is how I counted it). There is, at the very least, enough grey area there that it puts that entire potential answer-strategy (that it might be the number of lines) into question.

Jongx, Sorry but you are wrong. There is no conclusive answer on number 2. Two figures have 10 lines, one has 9 and one as 11. Your test sucks.

The answer to the last question for Abstract Reasoning is D? Why? The flag should change color from black to white, shouldn’t it? A seems like the better answer.

Just finished my PI Cognitive Assessment. I got 31 correct answers out of 37 answered. Scale score 360 🙂
My suggestion is to take a bit of time to understand the type of answers and metabolize your method to solve them as fast as possible. After think what would be your strategy to answer as many questions as possible in 12 minutes. During the test you have to be fast in understanding if the problem take to much time, so guess the answer that seems more logical and pass over. Furthermore don’t get blocked if you decide to solve a problem and is taking too much time.
You can’ t know the answers to the test, but you can maximize your preparation.

For this question:
Not all conference participants are doctors. All conference participants who are doctors are experts. Some doctors who participate at the conference are not certified. The conclusion should NOT be “Some certified people at the conference are experts.” The conclusion should be “Cannot be determined”, because you CANNOT conclude that any doctors are even at the conference. There may be 100 people at the conference and all 100 of them could be plumbers.

George, it is correct to conclude “Some certified people at the conference are experts.”
It clearly states, “Some doctors who participate at the conference are not certified.” Likewise, Some doctors who participate (and thus ARE at the conference) are certified, and thus also experts.

From “Some doctors who participate at the conference are not certified” , it does not follow that there are doctors that participate in the conference that are certified.
Logically, some only tells you there exists at least 1 doctor at the conference that is not certified. It tells you no information about the existence of certified doctors at the conference.

The second question for Abstrat Reasoning has multiple answers.
There’s at least a second common trait, they all have a triangle depicted except for Answer D. I claim my 100%.

I agree with Joachim. The line counting answer is not consistent in counting the base (bottom) structures lines as either 1 or 2 lines.

Hi Bob, Good question! Cognitive ability can be improved, in the sense that one can reach their full potential. Today, not only scientific research but also employers, acknowledge this and advise candidates to prepare in advance. It’s a win-win for everyone IMO.

Abstract Reasoning Question 2 answer B only has 9 lines and answer C has 11 lines, so both answer B or C can be the correct answer if it’s based on the 2 test images both has 10 lines in it.
