Our Science

Creating solutions for tomorrow through research and development

Research and developing medicines to treat diseases are at the cornerstone of what we do.

Collectively, our natural curiosity, our exploration of the unexpected and a patient first attitude allows us to continuously chase the miracles of science.

Investment Leader

As one of the top three R&D spenders within the Canadian pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and consistently a top spender as a percentage of revenue, we are focused on developing innovative therapies in areas such as oncology, diabetes and cardiology.

R&D Centre of Excellence

As the home of Sanofi’s North American Centres of Excellence for Analytical and Bioprocess R&D, our Toronto site plays an active role in developing new vaccines. Close to 300 people work in R&D at our Toronto site, including dozens of PhDs, Doctors of Pharmacy and bioprocess engineers with extensive academic and/or industry experience.

Biogenius Competition

Homemade slime. Tornado in a bottle.

While simple science activities tap into our desire to explore and experiment, the Sanofi Biogenius Canada Competition takes its up a few notches. And rightly so.

The Sanofi Biogenius Canada Competition encourages high school students from coast-to-coast-to-coast to be curious and explore real-life science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research ideas that have the potential change lives.

No ordinary science fair, it annually celebrates outstanding research projects submitted from across the country, from those in Grades 7 to 12, focusing on health sciences, life sciences and biotechnology. Hosted in partnership with Youth Science Canada, the competition is part of their regional and Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF).

Three winners are chosen in each of the three divisions: Junior (Grades 7 + 8), Intermediate (Grades 9 and 10) and Senior (Grades 11 + 12).

A leader in clinical research in Canada

Canada has an outstanding reputation for clinical research, built on consistently generating quality data necessary to evaluate a drug’s performance. The high level of medical expertise in Canada and the openness of investigative centres to clinical development make Canada attractive for Sanofi’s clinical research operations.

Cooperative projects with many partners

The Clinical Study Unit in Canada contributes significantly to Sanofi’s global efforts to develop new treatments. Our teams are currently overseeing some 70 Sanofi-sponsored clinical studies in a wide range of therapeutic areas, working with clinics and hospitals across the country.

Clinical studies are crucial in determining whether a particular drug is safe and effective, at which dosage, and any potential side effects. Only with all these data can regulatory approval (Health Canada’s “Notice of Compliance”) be obtained and the medicine made available to patients. Once a medicine is on the market, additional studies may be performed to learn more about its effectiveness and safety in various patient groups.
